Towards an Uncertain Future: The Case of Venezuela

Posted by: feedwordpress

Of course no one can possibly predict the future, but in the case of Venezuela, it seems that the Latin American country could very well become the next Soviet Union, at least when it comes to its collapse[1]. Considering the recent drop in the price of oil, and given that oil exports remains to this … Continue reading "Towards an Uncertain Future: The Case of Venezuela" read full post >>

12-Truth to Power

Posted by: feedwordpress

The information is plentiful and more detailed as we get closer to today’s Latin America. In a way this brings you closer to understanding because the details are more complete. On the other hand, it is also harder to grasp because the general overview of what was happening blurs as stories, regions and view points […] read full post >>

Week 11

Posted by: feedwordpress

This reading was a little hard to follow because it talked about different countries as opposed to focusing on just one. However, this was also the topic that my group and I did our video project on so I will be focusing mainly on Peru and the rise of Sendero Luminoso. When I started reading […] read full post >>

Week 10

Posted by: feedwordpress

This week opened my eyes to how big of an effect media can have on a community. The introduction of the radio connected people throughout all of Latin America in a way that had never happened before. People from the country and isolated communities were able to listen to the same things, and feel the […] read full post >>

Power to the people

Posted by: feedwordpress

This week I was introduced to the charismatic Maria Eva Duarte de Perón.  I was also introduced to the concept of ‘Populism’. Initially, it was very striking to me that some of the leaders did not want to be termed as a populist and the word, ‘populism’ had a negative connotation that forgone reason no one … Continue reading Power to the people read full post >>

Citizenship and Rights in the New Republics

Posted by: feedwordpress

The ‘Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen’ was made in 1789 and it stated that ‘Men are all born and remain free and equal in rights.’ This was the first time that the citizens were made the possessor of the rights, and was just the starting point of extending these rights to all … Continue reading Citizenship and Rights in the New Republics read full post >>

Comment on The Means Justifying the Ends by Elena Munk

Posted by: feedwordpress

Hi! Great post, I think it can be difficult to determine exactly who this corruption ulitmately hurts and to what extent, but that does make it excusable or okay to 'forget' like you said. However, I also think it depends on how corrupt a leader is and what type of 'work' they are doing for a country, like are living standards genuinely improving or is the government implementing half thought out projects. Unfortunately, it seems that the latter is the usual practice or something like it. Either way what can be clear is that corruption needs to be stopped and the system fixed, as the two previous commentors shared. read full post >>

11-The Terror

Posted by: feedwordpress

I found this week’s readings hard to follow because the chapter talks about a number of Latin American countries all with different stories; and all of the stories have different backgrounds which made it feel as though I did not have enough context. This could be partly because I have a general view of Latin […] read full post >>

Week 9

Posted by: feedwordpress

This week is a tough one for me to write about because this topic seems to me quite controversial. Latin America has always been majorly influenced by the United States. The economic industrialization that occurred in the late 1800’s resulted in the United States needing to export goods to Latin America. In return, they would […] read full post >>
