Week 2- The duality of a being

Posted by: feedwordpress

I would say that the way i picture Colombus has always changed. During my primary school teachers always tried to make us love him, after all, he was the one who “discovered” us and brought civilization. We used to have “big events” at school where we would do representations of his discovery. In this phase … Sigue leyendo Week 2- The duality of a being read full post >>

Week 2 Blog Entry – Understanding Violence

Posted by: feedwordpress

While reading Columbus’ journal for this week’s pre-reading, I came to see the violence of his actions and the consequent violence perpetuated by them in a different light than previously. Having been taught my high school history curriculum by a … Continue reading read full post >>

Week 2

Posted by: feedwordpress

In reading The Voyage of Christopher Columbus and The First New Chronicle and Good Government the reader is given a glimpse into the initial European perspectives on indigenous societies and the American continent. Glaringly evident is the discrepancy in represented voices, exacerbated by the flagrant contrasting juxtaposition of the two cultures at first contact. It is regrettable that no complementary accounts could grant modern readers an indigenous perspective on this historical meeting of cultures. In both Columbus and Poma’s accounts, a focal point is placed on a duality of primary interests of the...read more read full post >>

Week Two

While reading The Voyage of Christopher Columbus: Columbus’s own journal of Discovery Newly Restored and Translated, something that stuck out to me was when Columbus and his men first arrive, their interaction with the natives is pleasant and friendly, yet the first thing on his mind is  how “They must be good servants, and intelligent, for I can see that they quickly repeat everything said to them. I believe they would readily become Christians;” (94). He describes how they welcome them onto their island and even offers them objects of value (presumably)...read more read full post >>

Week Two

Prior to attending UBC,  I was briefly taught about the explorer Christopher Columbus in high school and people in my everyday life. I learned that he was an Italian explorer who promised Spanish influence in the new world to the King and Queen of Spain. I was informed that he was the first european to […] read full post >>

WEEK 2 When two worlds collide

Posted by: feedwordpress

My impression of Columbus, has over time and exposure to more information about him, become more and more jaded. I struggle to understand his actions and impressions of the people and cultures he interjected himself upon. I can concede that he was fulfilling orders and personal desires to discover more of the world around him […] read full post >>

Week 2 – The Meeting of Two Worlds

Posted by: feedwordpress

As stated in the weekly lecture video, 1492 is a date that resonates around the world strongly. The arrival of Christopher Columbus and his people in October 1492 to the Americas is what separates world history from its pre-Latin American narrative to the current post-Latin American world. Personally, I can’t help but find it somewhat […] read full post >>

Week 2: The Meeting of Two Worlds

Posted by: feedwordpress

Growing up in Asia, the “discovery” of the Americas was not a major focus in History class, and hence, I do not have much previous knowledge with regards to Christopher Columbus and his journey to the Americas. However, despite my lack of extensive knowledge, I knew a little here and there. While I never truly …
