Week Five: The Slaughterhouse

Posted by: feedwordpress

I wondered, while reading “The Slaughterhouse”, who Echevarria was writing the piece for. He was obviously denouncing caudillos, Rosas in particular, but I couldn’t tell who his intended audience was. He was so condescending and insulting to supporters of Rosas and the caudillos that I doubt he was trying to speak to any of them, […] read full post >>

Week 5: New Views on Independent Liberalism

Posted by: feedwordpress

After last week’s discussion, my idea surrounding independence shifted. Before, I associated the word with declarations, constitutions and negotiated transitions of power; Mainly because that’s how it was taught to me in the Canadian schooling system. Now, I understand that independence does not immediately promise or secure a stable and properly negotiated internal political system. Continue reading "Week 5: New Views on Independent Liberalism" read full post >>

Week Five: Caudillos Versus the Nation State

Posted by: feedwordpress

What I found particularly interesting this week was Jon’s discussion of the social contract, and how, in the face of such a fragmented and almost lawless society (especially in the countryside and remote outposts), such a concept that we take … Continue reading read full post >>

Caudillismo: Indigenous In the Modern World

Posted by: feedwordpress

In this week’s readings, we read about the Caudillo Era in the 19th Century in which once again, Indigenous people were being leveraged and used for the sake of the ‘superior’ classes (elites), after and during the Independence revolution spearheaded by those living in the colonies.  The Caudillo Era was a point in Spanish Colonial …

Week Four: Caudillos Versus the Nation State

Posted by: feedwordpress

Let’s start with the idea of liberalism. Nations typically have specific political and economic systems that they claim to adhere to, however, with practically any example, we can see that it is inevitable that a nation will partake in specific actions that go directly against the “rules” laid out by the system. For example, oneContinue reading "Week Four: Caudillos Versus the Nation State" read full post >>

Authority in Post-Independence Latin America

Posted by: feedwordpress

I felt the description in this weeks lecture of 19th century post independence Latin America as [“Independent nations prolonging the colonial project”] to be interesting and apt. Bolivar and his contemporaries instigated a self serving independence in Latin America. It … Continue reading read full post >>

Week Five: Caudillos versus the Nation State

Posted by: feedwordpress

Post independent Latin America was not in an ideal political climate. Latin America in general during the nineteenth century was not considered “ideal” in any sense — it was described as a “violent place where every man was against every man,”. A place where there were wars against one another, as well as other nations […] read full post >>

Week 5 | The Evolution of Caudillismo

Posted by: feedwordpress

The evolution of the exploitation of the Indigenous People can be traced through the readings we do each week. Since the “first encounters” passing through the Independence movements to the “Caudillo Era” in the 19th century, we can see how Indigenous people were used and manipulated to the sake of the elites. In the vergeContinue reading "Week 5 | The Evolution of Caudillismo" read full post >>
