Week 4 – Independence
Posted by: feedwordpress
Latin American independence is such a hard topic, its not hard to understand the reasons of it but because of Latin America’s geographical extension. Im starting my blog post saying I didnt not like Marti’s reading, I found it hard to read and a little unorganized for my personal liking (as it switches rapidly between … Sigue leyendo Week 4 – Independence →

Week Four – Independence in Latin America
Posted by: feedwordpress
This week’s topic, Independence, is a huge topic to tackle. Especially when we are covering the independence of such a huge geographical area that is Latin America. I found the narrative of José Martí incredibly beautiful and poetic; the way in which he describes the struggle of the people of the New World against the […] read full post >>

When reading the “Lieutenant Nun”, I was astonished at the journey Catalina de Erauso took. One thing that stood out to me was the fact that the protagonist rarely describes they’re emotions, except for when she meets her brother, and when she kills him. It almost seems as if she doesn’t change at all through the length of her memoir. I’d say that Catalina de Erauso was a rebel as she did something that was not of the norms of her society. Although she doesn’t seem to have a particular cause for...read more read full post >>

Week 4 Response
Posted by: feedwordpress
These past few weeks, we have been primarily focusing on the early stages of Latin America. For example, the landing of Christopher Columbus as well as the beginning of the colonial period. However this week, it seems that we have begun a more political chapter of Latin America. Personally, I’ve always found politics less interesting, […] read full post >>
Week 3 – The Colonial Experience
Posted by: feedwordpress
The excerpt of the memoir of la Monja Alferez, titled “The Lieutenant Nun”, was really fascinating because it offered such a hollywood-esque take on an aspect of this era of colonialism. Being a big fan of movies myself, learning about this story of a woman who cut her hair and pretended to be a man, becoming not […] read full post >>

The Colonial Experience With the fall of the Granada, Muhammad XII surrendered to the Spanish catholic monarchs, which brought to an end to 800 years of Muslim control. Jews were told to leave the peninsula or force to be converted … Continue reading → read full post >>
Week 3

I found “the Lieutenant Nun”, the excerpt from the memoir of la Monja Alferez, very fascinating. Which, of course, wasn’t the case until I read a summary of the memoir under her portrait. She must have had extraordinary battle skills to survive being a traveling soldier, murderer, and conquistador (to name a few), considering she was a woman; … Continue reading Week 3

The Colonial Experience

“In short, these paintings give us a vision of a hierarchical social order in which racial difference is in sync with a whole series of other distinction. Everyone has a place in this panorama of social society but the internal grid divides one social group from another.” Slavery ended in Brazil in 1888, an estimated […] read full post >>
