Historically speaking, Rights have been far less assumed than argued for. The rights that today we strongly believe in and take for granted, have all once been fought for. Today we may seem to think that “everyone is equal before the law” but in practice, unfortunately, this isn’t the case today and definitely wasn’t 100 … Continue reading Week 6 read full post >>
Week 6 – El Partido Independiente de Color & Emancipation as an On-Going Process

One of the documents included in our required reading this week was “Political Program of the Partido Independiente de Color”. This document was published in 1908 as the constitution of the political party Partido Independente de Color. I was incredibly shocked … Continue reading → read full post >>

So as the focus of our discussions strays from talk of liberation and how people would go about forming their government to this week, how people were actually living and how their governments were performing in the grand scheme of things, we start to see the many flaws in society as a whole and how not everyone was being treated equally or fairly for that matter. During the mid 19th century, the majority of Latin American citizens lived in rural areas, with a select minority living in the major cities...read more read full post >>

As Dawson mentioned, race and caste were the most prominent categories in the early Latin American republican period, even before women’s rights became a topic of of debate. However, at this point in time, even something as straight …

This week’s readings were interesting, especially because when thinking about and studying rights and citizenship in Latin America, the black population is most likely to be left out. It was also interesting because when thinking about emancipation in Latin America the case study is usually Haiti, and in this week’s readings we could see that […] read full post >>
Freedom as a Process
Posted by: feedwordpress
For this week’s lecture video and readings, a great emphasis is placed on a subjective and fairly contentious topic-that of citizenship and rights. As we have been exploring the nature of Latin America, both as a geographical set of nations and as an abstract idea, we have looked into its conception and maturation, as it… Continue reading Freedom as a Process read full post >>
Week 6: Citizenship and Rights in the New Republics.

I’d like to begin this week’s post by thinking about the term “scientific racism” as it seems to be a key point behind this week’s topic: Citizenship and Rights in the new Republics. Scientific racism, as Dawson describes it, is the belief that some people are destined to rule and others to be ruled. Be […] read full post >>
