The Good Neighbour

The United States of America prides itself on being the strongest regional hegemon in the world. It sees itself as the worlds police force with the rights as well as the capability to impose its way of life on other states. Obviously, this is not always to be seen as a bad thing, however, […]

The Export Boom as Modernity

I have always found the concept of “modernity” to be one to investigate. This drive for modernity came during the core period of the Second Industrial Revolution. Contextually, improvements in the transport industry and technology propelled states into untouchable power. Paired with the scramble for Africa, this desire for “modernization” is by no means unorthodox. […]

Citizenship and Rights in the New Republics III

“She rejects equality in the name of the advantagess that (some) women felt they enjoyed under the existing regime: the “unequalled mastery” making them “strong, colossal in the midst of their weakness” I think the concept of the past not necessarily being in the past to be incredibly striking. 1888 might seem like it was a […]

Week Three

When reading the “Lieutenant Nun”, I was astonished at the journey Catalina de Erauso took. One thing that stood out to me was the fact that the protagonist rarely describes they’re emotions, except for when she meets her brother, and when she kills him. It almost seems as if she doesn’t change at all through the length of her memoir. I’d say that Catalina de Erauso was a rebel as she did something that was not of the norms of her society. Although she doesn’t seem to have a particular cause for…read more

Week Two

While reading The Voyage of Christopher Columbus: Columbus’s own journal of Discovery Newly Restored and Translated, something that stuck out to me was when Columbus and his men first arrive, their interaction with the natives is pleasant and friendly, yet the first thing on his mind is  how “They must be good servants, and intelligent, for I can see that they quickly repeat everything said to them. I believe they would readily become Christians;” (94). He describes how they welcome them onto their island and even offers them objects of value (presumably)…read more

Week One

I watched “Casta Paintings: An Introduction” (http://last100.arts.ubc.ca/casta-paintings-an-introduction/) and “The Colonial Experience” (http://last100.arts.ubc.ca/the-colonial-experience-2/). “Casta Paintings: An Introduction” and “The Colonial Experience” both discuss the Casta Paintings, although “The Colonial Experience” also deals with the life of Catalina de Erauso. “The Colonial Experience” delved into the intriguing life of Catalina de Erauso. It felt like I was listening to a story rather than an actual historical occurrence, probably because of how exciting it was. It is hard to imagine a woman in the 1600’s pretending to be man and travel as much…read more

Week One of LAST100, and What A Ride It’s Already Been, or How I Learned to Love Myself Again.

Hi! My name is Tom Lambrou and I’m in my fourth year at UBC, having recently transferred from the idea of working a major in Creative Writing to pursuing the (likely) far more applicable degree in English Literature studies. I am taking the LAST 100 course mainly in the spirit of having a more rounded […]

Week 12: speaking the truth

From this week reading,I just realiced that there are many authoritarian governments in Latin America. How is it possible that they have done that? I am just saying this because even when the government killed those people they also killed the women that were complaining, mentioning that those took actions against the government, but in […]

Week 12: Speaking Truth to Power

Following along with what was discussed in week 11 of our class with “Los Desaparecidos.” This week we looked into concepts that occurred during and after the military dictatorship within the late 1970’s to early 1980’s. One aftermath that stayed in my mind was the Madres of the Plaza de Mayo. Mothers who were victims of […]
