The four documents this week all revolve around a particular speech given by Eva Peron to hundreds of thousands of Peronistas in 1951. What I find most interesting about these documents is they seem to showcase the difficulty in controlling a populist ... read full post >>

Eva and Juan Perón: the re-election
Posted by: feedwordpress
The Argentinian government of the mid 20th century was directed by the political Juan and Eva Perón. The documents for this week are centered around the reelection of the Peróns to office for another six years as demanded by the people.
Document 7.1 delivers an biased view of the re-election as it is reported by a US New York Times newspaper reporter Foster Hailey who uses a tone of skepticism and uncertainty throughout the article. Foster states that the rally was organized by the Confederation of Labor and basically claims that Perón indirectly organized it in this way so as to insure his re-election. Eva’s decision for re-election was a very uncertain and ‘unqualified’ as she hesitated for 4 days to make the final decision. The reporter searches for all hints of corruption pointing out any suspicious gaps that exist which would indicate political corruption. Therefore I find it hard to understand exactly the message he is trying to convey, whether it be propaganda for anti-Argentina United States, or if he is just a nosy reporter searching for political gossip.
The second article is easier to interpret as it is written by the Perón Party, whom obviously support the Peróns and will convey this appropriately. It summarizes the great political leading of the Peróns and all they have done to ‘save’ Argentina from past corruption. Eva and Juan are idealized as ‘servants of the people’ who listen to the people and assure the country’s stability. The Juan Perón is addressed as ‘My General’ and is treated majestically, being praised as the savior of Argentina.
The last version of the Perón re-election is one of a much more objective tone. It translates Eva’s speech which clear portrays her devotion to the people and the crowds stubborn and controlling outbursts. She saw herself alongside the workers and was given the power to stand up for the people, but wanted to make sure she was making the right decision.

This weeks reading focuses on the important role that radio broadcasting technology played in the political endeavors of various populist leaders in Latin America. Radio gave these figures more a widespread public presence, especially among the rural and indigineous communities who were no longer excluded by literacy in order to participate in the conversation. The […] read full post >>
week 9: Commerce, Coercion, & America’s Empire

In chapter six, Dawson begins by describing the United States as a rising imperial power throughout the early 20th century, both in terms of physical and ideological domination. During this time, Latin America was considered instrumental for expanding U.S. commercial interests in the region because of its valuable raw materials and resources. Policy at the time also proclaimed the […] read full post >>

I enjoyed a lot this week chapter because Dawson describes all the Latin American popularismo characteristics and passages in a clear and light way that he takes you back to those times. I’d like to emphasize about “Tata Lázaro” I don’t know how many of you have heard the “Tata” expression, which is quite famous […] read full post >>
