Week Four – Independence Narratives, Past and Present

Posted by: feedwordpress

Generalization is an issue that’s present almost everywhere in Latin America, and it is false because even though someone can identify themselves as Latin American, within a region, there is an immense diversity of language, culture, customs, beliefs, traditions, economical stance, political view etc. A good example of differences within a region would be the communities of… Continue reading Week Four – Independence Narratives, Past and Present read full post >>

Week 4: Independence Narratives, Past and Present

Posted by: feedwordpress

To learn that Haiti was one of the first countries to win their independence was a surprise to me. If I was ever asked which countries in Latin America I would have thought won their independence first, I would have responded with countries like Chile, Peru or maybe even Argentina. I remember being part of … read full post >>

Catalina de Erauso

Posted by: feedwordpress

The story of Catalina de Erauso is very interesting, especially for its time. It is hard to believe that many of the events in her story could have actually happened. Since the story was written a long time after it happened, it is possible that some of the events were added to it or exaggerated […] read full post >>

When I read Catalina de Erauso’s summarized life story at the beginning of the reading, I was immediately taken aback. What struck me as even more surprising, however, was the fact that once it became revealed that Catalina had ran away from the covenant, across Spain, and to the Americas, both the Pope and the King of Spain allowed her to go about her ways. Although,...read more read full post >>

Week 3 – The Lieutenant Nun

Posted by: feedwordpress

I’ve never heard of Catalina de Erauso before reading the excerpt from her memoir. Her story is interesting and she is undoubtedly a very brave woman but it’s seems far too fantastical to be real; for example, her almost supernatural ability to not be discovered (ie. how her own parents didn’t recognize her), and the […] read full post >>

The Colonial Experience

I think it's important to recognize the diversity of Latin America and it's incredibly complex history of immigration. Keeping this in mind, to recognize where some of the sensualization or fetishization of these stories comes from; the story of Catali... read full post >>
