Caudillos vs. The Nation State
Posted by: feedwordpress
Before this weeks reading, I knew nothing about the ‘Caudillos’, I’ve never even heard the word before. After reading this however its evident the Caudillos whether good or bad are important figures in the history of Latin America. Caudillos were military leaders who with the support of the lower class were able to gain power in the country. … Continue reading "Caudillos vs. The Nation State" read full post >>
Week 5: Caudillos Versus the Nation State

Comparing the excerpts from Alex Dawson's Latin America Since Independence from last week to this week's Esteban Echeverría's The Slaughterhouse (1838/1871) we move from speeches where the main power comes from rhetoric and recycling authors to a highly religiously powered text. The main purpose of Echeverría's The Slaughterhouse is to belay a perception of historical events through his lenses which he chooses to present the events as a sort of God influenced cosmic retribution for mans' sins. The creation of this story, whether true or not, is one of few examples or stories told from a traditionalist perspective during this time period in Latin American history. read full post >>

Caudillos vs. The Nation State Reflection

Reading about the Caudillos reminding me a lot of what I had learned in school about the “Coronéis”, or “Coronelism” (Coronelismo). They were very similar to the Caudillos, in the sense that they were present in Brazil during the same time period (late 19th century up until the early 20th century), and their role in society was similar as well. They were local authorities in rural areas that had vast influence. What would happen back then was a series of “exchange of favors” (troca de favores, in Portuguese). The federal government was comprised...read more read full post >>

Week 5: Caudillos Vs The Nation State

To be honest- I waited this week until after class to write my blog post because I had a hard time making sense of the readings on my own. I guess it was difficult for me to distinguish a “Caudillo” from any other politician, whether in the 19th century, or any time period. The concept […] read full post >>

This Weeks material touched on the anxieties Latin Americans faced in the age of the Caudillos as Argentina moved from a violent and seemingly barbaric leader in Juan Manuel de Rosas to a more organised republican system of government. One thing I found interesting was how regardless of the ruthlessness of Rosas leadership, the catholic … read full post >>

Week 5: Caudillos Versus the Nation State

Caudillos are types of political leaders and critical figures in societies torn by conflict, nations where citizens could not turn to civic institutions or presses to defend their interests. This being said, I found the role of caudillos quite interesting. In the readings, they described them as being important figures that are meant to be … More Week 5: Caudillos Versus the Nation State read full post >>
