Week 8: Signs of Crisis in a Gilded Age

Posted by: feedwordpress

Having never learned or heard of Porfirio Diaz before last week’s reading, I genuinely thought he was a good leader and human being. In some respects, Diaz was a good leader, he was able to “modernize” Mexico and stabilize the economy. However, his government was anything but a democracy, it was a dictatorship with its … read full post >>

I need to say that I enjoyed the readings of this week because it involves a lot of stories about Mexico. First of all, I think that countries like Mexico and Chile for example, used to have so many struggles and problems with poor people. With these kind of situations, the Mexican government at the […] read full post >>

Week 8: Signs of Crisis in a Gilded Age

Posted by: feedwordpress

This weeks reading began with the idea that the gilded age never existed, an idea that I found very intriguing. How could it not of existed?     This chapter was about the modernization of Latin America. Many countries in Latin America looked to Europe as an example of what a modern country should be. Week 7 – The Export Boom as Modernity

Posted by: feedwordpress

It is funny how as a Mexican I know so little about Porfirio Diaz…actually not so funny. Growing up, my grandmother always talked about him. Every few years we would visit and each time she would take us to the Zocalo and she would tell us about the great things he did as president of … More Week 7 – The Export Boom as Modernity read full post >>

Ch. 4: The Export Boom as Modernity

This chapter focuses on the modernization of Latin America right after it gains its independence. According to Dawson, modernization involved innovation. New and advanced technology was invented.
