Speaking Truth to Power

The readings this week were very disheartening. After last week’s grim readings, I was hoping for a more positive outcome to the decades following the Terror. Instead, I was bombarded with overwhelmingly complex issues that continue to plague Latin America today, namely the war on drugs and the prospect of reconciling nations after the atrocities […] read full post >>
Week 12: Speaking Truth to Power

This past week’s lecture and readings touched on some of the dark ages in Argentine history. The 1970s and 80s saw Argentina become the victim of a devastating military coup and subsequent authoritarian dictatorship. These regimes lead by the likes of Jorge Rafael Videla and _______ were oppressive and violent, silencing voices and instilling utter … read full post >>

Week 12: Speaking Truth to Power

Dawson describing the dirty wars and the role that women played in bringing down these oppressive regimes are the first time I’ve ever heard about them. Hearing how these brave women protested their children’s disappearance was truly remarkable. Reading that the “secret police began stalking the Madres, even kidnapping and killing a few” is really … read full post >>
Week 12 – Speaking Truth to Power

The opening of this chapter discusses the Madres de Plaza de Mayo, which was my first time ever hearing about these very brave women. They were a group of women, mothers to be exact whose children had disappeared during state terrorism in Argentina. Their protest in questioning the government took place in the plaza which […] read full post >>
Week 12: Speaking the Truth to Power

This weeks readings were a very inspiring story of an entire nation rallying together. Everyone put away their interests of self preservation, for the greater good of a country. That’s why I think this issue gained as much global coverage as it did. The Madres de la Plaza de Mayo, to me were the most inspiring. I cannot imagine what it would of been like to place yourself in harms way, especially when you know that your government has a way of making people disappear. “The group of fourteen women...read more read full post >>
Week 11: The Terror

It was easy to imagine the content of this week’s readings when reading the title of the chapter. Violence, guerrillas, oppostitions, masacres, bloodbaths… terror. I personally think this chapter encloses one of the most important peaks in the history of Latin America. Most of the texts evoke a lot of strong emotions. It is very […] read full post >>
Week 11: The Terror
Posted by: feedwordpress
This week’s readings focused on a few major conflicts including 1) the proxy war occurring in Guatemala between US and USSR with China and 2) Peru’s dirty war as a part of their civil war. The contrast between these two conflicts coincide with their attempts to differently create “prosperous peasantry” (Max Cameron). It is interesting to see how although many … More Week 11: The Terror read full post >>
Ch. 9-The Terror

This week’s reading was about war and violence in Latin America that happened in the years 1959-1990. Not only is it called the terror, but can also be called the “Dirty Wars”. Reading about the wars the happened in Latin America was sort of overwhelming. I did not know there was so much violence and … Continue reading read full post >>
