towards and uncertain future

This weeks reeding cover the Texaco oil spill in Ecuador in the late 1900’s  and the political aftermath of the events.
This of course is an ongoing battle because the oil industry is and has been continuously in combat with the environmental regulations and policies. The very extraction of oil itself is terrible for the environment and the entire industry is completely corrupt with regards to the environment.  The safety regulations are set for a reason but so frequently they are overlooked which results in a destruction such as the occurrence in Ecuador. Page 379 of Dawson explains that the oil company had the means but not the will to employ new environmental regulations merely due to expense.  More regulations means more expense and that takes away from their primary goal: money.
In document 11.1 The court assesses Chevrons faults from an objective and subjective view. This is certainly a matter of globalization as it is environmentalism.  As the world becomes further globalized companies no longer need a base from their home country, and chose new and foreign locations with less policy and regulation to set their headquarters.  This setting allows for a company to escape the bounds of national policy and act as an independent. They are masterminds at finding loopholes in national regulations and therefore build a strong defense against the court systems.

In one of Chevrons defenses they expressed that they did not have responsibility over the actions of Taxaco.  Again, the large industry does not want to take responsibility for its actions because it does not see a larger picture.  Each department is tightly protected and they make it nearly impossibly to pin point who is to blame for what.

To return to the topic of the chapter, what will this mean for the future?  Its clear that environmental issues are pressing, specifically towards global economy.  The uncertainty is in the hands of global moral.  What will the future priorities be? to save the economy or to save the earth?
